Roberto Martin: An Especially Intense but Beautiful Three Weeks from ASCO to START Barcelona

Roberto Martin, Medical Oncologist and Clinical Investigator at START Barcelona – HM CIOCC Early Phase Program, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“These past three weeks have been especially intense, but also beautiful, work-wise. Between the end of May and the beginning of June, I attended the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting held in Chicago. I attended along with the director of the START unit in Barcelona, Tatiana Hernández-Guerrero, and we had the opportunity to meet with the rest of the teams from the START units of USA and Europe. It was incredible to build a team with people from such different backgrounds.
This year, my ASCO meeting experience was different from others. We met with the sponsors of the clinical trials we already have open to discuss with them the biology of the molecule, the benefits patients are experiencing, and the toxicity, providing our feedback on how things could be improved, and them giving us information about the next steps.
At the same time, one of the objectives of attending this congress is to find new treatment options for the patients and bring them to START Barcelona, since our ultimate goal is for every patient to have a new treatment possibility – one based on solid scientific rationale. Not just any treatment, but striving to offer them the best, so they can have a longer and better life, even if that’s not always possible. And an essential part of congresses like this is the people – reconnecting with old colleagues and coworkers to share personal and professional updates. All of this happens while we stay updated on the latest diagnostic and therapeutic advances in global oncology.
After returning, a week ago, the entire healthcare team at START Barcelona underwent basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation training in a course certified by the American Heart Association (AHA). A course to keep us up to date and prepared for any potential emergencies we might face in the unit.
And I still have last week to tell you about!”
