” ‘An ambitious life is a life of endless disappointment.’ A friend recently reached out, disappointed that he wasn’t selected for a highly competitive job. It was a stretch role for where he was in his career – but well within his capabilities.
He went for it.
He didn’t get it.
And for a moment, he was crushed.It made me reflect on how often those of us who stretch ourselves face disappointment – and how much our growth depends on how we respond to it. The fantasy of steady, upward, uninterrupted success?
It’s just that: a fantasy.
The real work lies in:
Learning the right lessons
Adapting to new information
Filtering useful from useless feedback
And above all, persisting
If you’re ambitious – if you’re trying to drive change or grow professionally – prepare to be disappointed.
Often.
Because an ambitious life is a life of endless disappointment. But the alternative – staying where you are, never stretching – is probably not an option you can live with.”
