Alessio Bricca: Key facts and guidelines set forth by the WHO about physical activity

Alessio Bricca, Assistant Professor at University of Southern Denmark in the Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics, posted on X/Twitter:

Exploring Physical Activity.

Physical Activity is key in promoting health, mitigating the risk of noncommunicable diseases, and fostering mental well-being. This elucidates key facts and guidelines set forth by the WHO about physical activity.

What exactly is physical activity? It’s any movement requiring energy expenditure—walking, cycling, sports, and even active play! It’s for everyone, at any skill level, and it’s a game-changer for your health.

Recommended levels of physical activity vary for different age groups. For example, children under 5 should engage in various activities several times a day, promoting healthy growth.

From children to seniors, everyone benefits from being active. WHO recommends adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week.

It’s not just about the quantity; quality matters too. Older adults are encouraged to include varied multicomponent activities to enhance functional capacity and prevent falls. Let’s keep moving at every stage of life!

Calling all pregnant and postpartum women! Did you know that staying active during this time has numerous health benefits for both moms and babies?

Sedentary behavior is on the rise, and it’s affecting our health negatively. Higher amounts of sedentary behavior are linked to various health issues, from weight gain to increased mortality. It’s time to stand up for our health!

Global levels of physical activity aren’t where they should be. Over 1.4 billion adults are insufficiently active, and the numbers are rising. It’s a call to action for individuals, communities, and nations to prioritise physical activity!

How can we increase physical activity globally? It takes a collective effort! From safe walkways to workplace policies, schools to healthcare providers, everyone plays a role. Let’s create a world where being active is easy and encouraged!

Remember, every step counts! Let’s make physical activity a daily priority for a healthier, happier world. Share your tips and experiences by sharing and commenting this thread. Together, we can make a difference!
