Lisa A. Lacasse Urges Reversal of Medicaid Cuts Affecting Cancer Patients

Lisa A. Lacasse, President of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Tens of thousands of dedicated volunteers and cancer advocates engaged with every member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, making it clear that Medicaid cuts would severely impact millions of patients. Their advocacy – through meetings, thousands of phone calls, emails, and postcards – ensured that cancer patients were a prominent focus during the markup process.
Despite this, lawmakers who voted for these cuts supported loss of coverage for many of their constituents who have no other affordable options for health coverage. I strongly urge these lawmakers to listen to their constituents and reconsider their stance as this bill advances.
The approval of $715 billion in cuts to Medicaid will result in at least 8.6 million people losing coverage, according to the nonpartisan, Congressional Budget Office. No matter how it’s packaged, these cuts will have grave consequences. It is unconscionable to force states to cut health coverage for cancer screenings, treatment and access to innovative cancer therapies or nursing home care. Decades of evidence have shown that cutting off Medicaid coverage for millions of people nationwide will ultimately lead to more suffering and death from cancer.
American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) urges Congress to remove these life-threatening cuts before the bill moves forward and if cuts are not removed to oppose. There is simply too much to lose for the millions that rely on Medicaid to prevent, detect, treat and survive cancer.”

Lisa A. Lacasse called attention to the severe impact of proposed Medicaid cuts on cancer patients, citing data from the Congressional Budget Office estimating millions would lose coverage. She urged lawmakers to reconsider and emphasized ACS CAN’s continued opposition unless the cuts are removed.
