Sean Khozin: TRIUMPH Think Tank Findings on Real-World Evidence in Breast Cancer

Sean Khozin, Chief Executive Officer at CEO Roundtable on Cancer, shared an article on LinkedIn:

“Over the past couple of years, I’ve had the pleasure of co-chairing a multidisciplinary think tank on real-world evidence (RWE) in breast cancer with Dr. Adam Brufsky of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. The group, called TRIUMPH (Think Tank on Real-World Evidence In the US from Multiple Perspectives in Healthcare), brought together a diverse mix of oncologists, patient advocates, health economists, regulatory/policy experts, and industry stakeholders.

Our shared goal was to examine the evolving role of RWE in treatment decision-making and to identify concrete strategies for increasing its acceptance and utility in clinical practice.

The think tank recognized that while regulatory interest in RWE has grown, major barriers remain at the point of care. Many clinicians and guideline bodies continue to question the methodological rigor and clinical relevance of RWE, especially in comparison to randomized controlled trials. Through our discussions, we reached strong consensus that the field must move beyond simply adapting trial-based endpoints like progression-free survival, which are often impractical to measure in routine practice.

Instead, we need to design and validate real-world endpoints that are both clinically meaningful and patient-informed, metrics that reflect the lived experiences of patients and the realities of everyday care.

Earlier this week, we published our findings and recommendations. While breast cancer served as our focused use case, our broader aim is to help catalyze a shift toward patient-centered, data-driven care models that bridge the persistent divide between clinical research and real-world practice.

Central to this effort is building confidence among clinicians, guideline developers, and other decision-makers that rigorously developed RWE can serve as a reliable and actionable complement to traditional trials. We’re advocating for an inclusive, pragmatic approach to evidence generation, one that clinicians can trust and that better reflects the diversity and complexity of real-world oncology.

Special thanks to the TRIUMPH think tank members for their thoughtful contributions, deep expertise, and collaborative spirit throughout this effort, and to Pfizer for their support of this initiative and commitment to advancing the role of RWE in oncology: Nancy A.
