Runcie Chidebe Amplifies Breast Cancer Survivor’s Call for Support and Cancer Care Reform in Nigeria

Runcie Chidebe, Executive Director of Project PINK BLUE, shared a post on LinkedIn by Elizabeth Ugwoma Awo-Ejeh, Breast Cancer Survivor, adding:

“The financial toxicity associated with a cancer diagnosis in Nigeria is so high. It’s so devastating that a diagnosis of cancer for many of our people usually translates to an incursion of poverty and serious distress. I know of a breast cancer patient who have to take a loan to buy her medication. The government must improve access to financial resources and assistance for all cancer patients. No human should fight cancer alone.
Dear Friends, Please support Elizabeth Ugwoma Awo-Ejeh’s treatment in any amount possible. She is a very strong and powerful lady. She epistomises passion for change in cancer control, support for other women impacted with cancer and inspires cancer community engagement for early detection.”

Quoting Elizabeth Ugwoma Awo-Ejeh’s post:

“3 Years Later: My journey with Breast cancer. Three years ago, I heard the words that changed my life: ‘You have breast cancer.’ I was only 25. My world stopped. Since then, it’s been a rollercoaster…of pain, courage, faith, and growth. I’ve gone through: 8 sessions of chemotherapy, A mastectomy, 25 sessions of radiotherapy, and Ongoing hormone therapy for 5 years.
I’ve faced scary moments, like when I was told the cancer might have spread to my lungs. I had to fight, pray, and raise funds for a PET CT scan that, thankfully, showed it was not cancer. I’ve experienced the sting of rising medication costs and the heartbreak of skipping treatment because I couldn’t afford it. But I’ve also seen love in action—through friends, strangers, and divine provision.
God came through for me in so many ways on this journey through healing, provision, and strength I didn’t know I had. And I know God is not done with me.
Today, I’m alive. I’m thriving. I’m healing. I’ve chosen to turn my pain into purpose, advocating for cancer awareness, supporting other survivors, and pushing for better access to care in Nigeria. To every woman fighting right now: I see you. You are not alone. There is hope. To those who’ve supported me: Thank you for walking this journey with me.”
