Aaron Hansen: New Chemotherapy Database to Monitor Ovarian Cancer Treatment in New Zealand
Aaron Hansen, Acting Medical Director Cancer Services at Princess Alexandra Hospital, shared an article on LinkedIn:
“Exciting news!
New Zealand is establishing a national chemotherapy database for ovarian cancer – a critical step to improve treatment and outcomes. As the article notes, this database has the potential to significantly boost ovarian cancer survival rates, especially for Māori and Pacific women who face disparities.
However, I would encourage the founders of this database to take it a step further. Rather than limiting it to just chemotherapy for ovarian cancer, this is an opportunity to build a comprehensive national cancer registry that tracks all treatment modalities – including surgery, radiation, immunotherapy, and emerging therapies – across all gynecological cancers.
Linking this database to other existing cancer data sources would provide an even richer dataset to drive insights and guide policy. Expanding the scope beyond just ovarian cancer to include cervical, uterine, vulvar, and other gynae cancers would also maximize the database’s impact and enable a more holistic understanding of women’s cancer care in New Zealand.
Countries with robust national cancer registries have seen remarkable improvements in early diagnosis, care quality, and patient outcomes. I’m excited to see New Zealand take this important first step, and would encourage the team to leverage this momentum to create a world-class, future-proofed database that can truly transform cancer care for Kiwi women.
Congratulations on this important initiative – I look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have!”
