Learning from Nigeria’s HPV vaccine introduction with HE Dr Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu
Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, Chief Executive Officer at Medicaid Cancer Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“As we mark the end of World Immunization Week 2024, I am pleased to share Nigeria’s remarkable journey in introducing the HPV vaccine through an interview with the CHIC HPV: Coalition to Strengthen HPV Immunzation Community, where I contribute as a steering committee member.
7.7 million girls aged 9–14 were successfully vaccinated in the first phase across 16 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Nigeria’s rollout represents one of the largest single-country introductions of the HPV vaccine to date.
This is a significant public health achievement and a bold step toward eliminating cervical cancer and protecting future generations of Nigerian women.
I reflected on the importance of advocacy, community engagement, and the critical role of partnerships.
