Wafaa Rashed: Proud to announce PAPERI’s 7th Cohort Debate Session

Wafaa Rashed, Chair and Founder of PAPERI and Faculty Lecturer of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Ahram Canadian University, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Proud to Announce! 7th Cohort Debate Session.

We are thrilled to unveil the 7th Cohort Debate Session of the Policy Advocacy in Genetics and Genomics Course, a flagship initiative by the Pan-African PGS Education and Research Initiative (PAPERI).

Over the past weeks, a vibrant and diverse group of participants – from Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan, India, Malaysia, Yemen, and United Arab Emirates- have been preparing for a high-impact debate that tackles some of the most urgent issues at the intersection of genetics, genomics, public health, ethics, climate change, and innovation.

In this debate session, participants will critically engage with powerful questions that shape the future of genetics and genomics policy across Africa and beyond.

Debate Day: Saturday, May 10, 2025

Time: 4:00 PM Cairo Time

Topics include:

  • Who should control genetic research: communities or national boards?
  • Should AI be integrated into genomic policies?
  • Should genetic engineering be used to create universal vaccines?
  • Should indigenous communities have veto rights over ancestry research?
  • Is genomic surveillance essential or a privacy threat?
  • Should genomics research prioritize climate change health impacts?
  • Should pharmacogenomic testing be mandatory before drug approvals?

This is more than a debate.

It’s a showcase of Africa’s rising scientific leaders – ready to shape a healthier, more equitable future for generations to come.

Together, we are building the future of genomics, innovation, and policy leadership.

Join us, be inspired, and support the next generation of changemakers!”
