Adekemi Oyewusi: My recent talk at Okapi Children Cancer Foundation – Dear Doctor series
Adekemi Oyewusi, TMO Project Coordinator at OneHealth, shared a post on LinkedIn, posted on LinkedIn:
“Sharing a snippet from my recent talk at this year’s Okapi Children Cancer Foundation – Dear Doctor series.
I reflected on my journey through trauma, why I am now in therapy, and the silent struggles many childhood cancer survivors face and the stories that rarely make it into our medical files.
I spoke about what survivorship should truly mean, and posed some tough but necessary questions:
1) To healthcare professionals: Who do you become to your patient after the last chemo drip? Because beyond the cure is where true healing begins.
2) To Individuals: How do you welcome survivors back? Do you stigmatize them, or do you create a space where they can dream again, believe again, and belong?
I emphasized one powerful call to action: Let Survivors Lead. Involve survivors in program design, advocacy, and policy discussions. Our stories should not just be seen as testimonials; they are blueprints for change.
I closed with the timeless words of Maya Angelou that say: “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.””
