Roupen Odabashian: Doctors are NOT needed?

Roupen Odabashian, Hematology/Oncology Fellow at Karmanos Cancer Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Welcome, human health care workers.

It looks like everyone thinks that AI will take your jobs, from the predictions of Bill Gates that AI is going to replace physicians to Google DeepMind CEO, Demis Hassabis, saying that AI could eradicate all diseases in just 10 years, and even NVIDIA says that change is coming to doctors office!

I’m not sure what we’re going to do with all the doctors who are going to be unemployed in 10 years, but the current reality of AI adoption in health care is different. Lots of physicians are still struggling to understand what ChatGPT is.

However, on the bright side, it looks like healthcare laws are changing, and Medicare is reimbursing AI-enabled medical devices

Here is what you need to know about AI in healthcare today!

  • Have you ever had that moment of uncertainty when a patient asks for opioids? A new NIH-backed study tested an AI tool that screens hospitalized patients for opioid use disorder. It was just as good as doctors at flagging who should see an addiction specialist—and patients it flagged were 47% less likely to be readmitted in 30 days. Each avoided readmission saved around $6,800, making a strong case for hospitals to invest in AI! Show me the savings!!!
  • Another study showing AI passing the USMLE exams. This isn’t really news anymore. But again, this metric alone isn’t enough to gauge the accuracy of large language models in augmenting physicians or providing care. Passing the USMLE doesn’t make you a good doctor, and many of those USMLE questions and answers have been discussed online in the past. So, AI usually has access to the training data and already knows the answers.
  • I’m sure you’ve heard that doctors who use AI will replace doctors who don’t. This episode features Dr. Peter Kim discussing this very topic on his podcast.
  • Doctors aren’t the only ones struggling with documentation. Epic is investing in AI to support nurses with documentation, too. Eventually, every healthcare worker will have an AI to help them with documentation.
  • Do you need ChatGPT, but you are worried that it’s not HIPAA compliant? well, Doximity offers HIPAA-compliant ChatGPT for free. Or here is another HIPAA compliant ChatGPT, but it’s paid
  • Looks like no one needs Dr. Google anymore, according to this post, ChatGPT cured TMJ in seconds! I am not an ENT doc, but is this real?

Prompt of the day!

Have you ever had an issue with orgnizing patients’ medical data? Copy and paste that long medical note to Doximity and use this prompt, Make sure there are no names or identifying data in your prompt.

Task one: Please provide a one-line summary of the patient’s disease and current treatment, and one sentence about previous treatments

Task two: Break down the history, put the date at the beginning, and organize it in a chronological pattern

Let me know in the comments what type of AI news in healthcare interests you the most!”
