Monica Bertagnolli: Why academic freedom matters now more than ever?
Monica Bertagnolli, 17th Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Academic freedom is needed more than ever. The polarization that is damaging our society today is rooted in the loss of both the habit and the opportunity for rational, civil debate between people with different beliefs.
Our academic institutions must be a safe space for people to wrestle with serious, contentious issues without fear of censorship or retaliation.
This is easier said than done, as deeds can follow words and hate speech can lead to attacks on innocent people who deserve a place in our society. Academic freedom, therefore, comes with the requirement that institutions set and enforce ground rules so that ideas can be expressed, debated and improved upon by critical thinking without resorting to attacks on individuals who draw different conclusions.
Thank you Harvard President Alan Garber – for your steadfast commitment to academic freedom. Your institution has taken a brave step forward to help ensure that knowledge isn’t shaped by ideology but by evidence and scholarship.“
