Luchuo Engelbert Bain: The Future is bright – African medical students taking their future into their hands
Luchuo Engelbert Bain, Head of International Programs at African Population and Health Research Center, shared on LinkedIn:
“The Future is bright: African medical students taking their future into their hands
I was happy to share thoughts and learn from colleagues and medical students at a webinar yesterday on a hot subject organized by the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA):
Decolonizing Medical Education
Discussions questioned the relevance of existing curricula, training methods, the rationale to decolonize medical education and how, and the role of effective student advocacy in curriculum reform and design.
Listening to my esteemed panelists: E.Oluwabunmi Olapade-Olaopa, Odinaka Anyanwu, was extremely enriching.
My 3 take home messages:
- Curricula Must Reflect African Realities (culture, knowledge, expertise, context)
- Power and Knowledge Must Be continuously put to question and Rebalanced
- Decolonization Is Not Just Content—It’s Structure and Practice: Medical education is expensive: prioritize and invest to be able to challenge any agenda.
Thanks FAMSA (Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations) for the warm invitation:
You are on the right track, and courage!”
