Honoring Errol’s Legacy: A Family’s Mission to Fund Pediatric Cancer Research – The Institute of Cancer Research
The Institute of Cancer Research shared a post on LinkedIn:
“‘Errol was brave and fearless – we feel his loss enormously’
Rider McDowell’s son Errol was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a fast-growing malignant brain tumour, when he was 12. Despite six years of intensive treatment, Errol passed away in 2018.
Living in California, the McDowell family became acutely aware of the need for further funding into paediatric cancer research, and before he passed away, Errol embarked on a mission with his brothers, Mac and Piers, to encourage every American to donate $1.
Their campaign led to publicity from national TV and media outlets, and they raised close to $1m for their cause.
Since Errol’s death, the project has become even more important to his younger brothers, who go to school in the UK. Like Errol, they recognise that funding cancer research is the only path to a cure. They want to continue his legacy, hoping to raise £1m for cancer research in the UK.
The funds raised will support a number of cancer research charities, among them the ICR, and in particular Professor Louis Chesler’s lab, which aims to understand the biology of children’s cancers and use that information to discover and develop new personalised approaches to cancer treatment.
This Brain Tumour Awareness Month, we are especially grateful for the support of the McDowell family, helping us continue our vital work in this area.
