“Major Investment in Precision Cancer Treatment at the Randwick Health and Innovation Precinct.
The Australian Government has announced a $143 million investment in cutting-edge cancer research and treatment, ensuring better outcomes for children and adults with rare and hard-to-treat cancers. We are changing the model of care for children and adults with cancer!!
This funding will extend two world-leading programs, both based at UNSW:
- ZERO Childhood Cancer Program – Expanding support to young Australians up to 25 years old, offering personalized genomic-driven treatments for pediatric cancer patients. Congratulations to Professor Michelle Haber and Children’s Cancer Institute and Richard Mitchell and Kids Cancer Institute at Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network Randwick
- Precision Oncology Screening Platform Enabling Clinical Trials (PrOSPeCT) – Providing free genomic testing to identify the genetic makeup of tumors, helping match patients to the most effective treatments. Amazing work by Professor David Thomas and Omico.
I was so privileged to join Health Minister Mark Butler as he made the announcement at UNSW today. The precision medicine approach is a game-changer, it’s not just about research- it’s about providing a model of care – offering new hope for those facing the most challenging cancer diagnoses.
By leveraging genomic insights, researchers and clinicians can tailor treatments to each patient’s unique genetic profile, improving survival rates and reducing harmful side effects.
This investment ensures that Australian children and adults with rare cancers will have greater access to life-saving therapies and clinical trials, keeping our community at the forefront of global medical research. And we’re thrilled to support this lifechanging work at the UNSW Health Translation Hub, opening in October 2025.
A huge step forward in the fight against cancer!”
