Wafik S. El-Deiry: There are no trillion dollar endowments
Wafik S. El-Deiry, Associate Dean for Oncologic Sciences at the Warren Alpert Medical School and Director of the Legorreta Cancer Center at Brown University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“There are no trillion dollar endowments.
Endowments at universities accumulated over decades and support many causes as directed and restricted by the wishes of donors. All universities together do not have a trillion dollars in endowments that bring in 50 billion dollars a year in interest to support causes such as cancer research.
It would be great if universities had hundreds of billions or even billions in endowments to support biomedical research and clinical trials but they don’t. It is very important for the US to sustain and extend global leadership in science and medicine.
More collaboration between government and the private sector would help.”
