Sharon Kapambwe: United by Unique in Action
Sharon Kapambwe, Technical Officer of Cancer Control at the World Health Organization, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“United by Unique in Action.
Tomorrow is World Cancer Day under the theme ‘United by Unique’. The theme resonates with the visit I made to Mrs. Philippa Decuir’s Pink House in KIgali, Rwanda. She is a breast cancer survivor of three decades. Philippa is also the founder and Director of Breast Cancer Initiative East Africa.
She is passionate about raising awareness and empowering women cancer survivors. I first met her almost a decade ago. On this quiet Saturday, she also was visited by high school students who came do some community work. They also brought some donations/groceries for the women who lodge at her house. I found time to educate the students about cancer. They asked me some hard real life questions on cancer and I definitely enjoyed interacting them. I know these students are great cancer advocates for the future. Philippa has given up one of the rooms in her house to accommodate female cancer survivors while on treatment in Kigali. The lodging is free. Such a unique way to support others. She is embarking on expanding her property, funds allowing, so that more women can lodge while on treatment as out patients. This is really an example of been ‘United by Unique.’
I left the pink house with admiration and respect for Philippa for her work. When in Kigali, take time to see the pink house.”
