Pat Garcia-Gonzalez: A powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of all of us

Pat Garcia-Gonzalez, Chief Executive Officer at The Max Foundation, reshared a post by The Max Foundation, on LinkedIn, adding:

“The theme of World Cancer Day, United by Unique, is a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of all of us. No matter who or where we are, the whole is always better than the sum of the parts. Each one, an individual, with a unique story and purpose, united in our desire to live and love, to support our families and to help others.

Spot on CML is a powerful example of people turning this commitment into reality. Dr. Jerry Radich, a wonderful friend and Board member of The Max Foundation, and his team at Fred Hutch, help us make the impossible possible by diagnosing a rare form of leukemia from a blood spot on a piece of paper!

It’s a story of courage, innovation and caring. People helping people, because we can, and because we can, we must!”

Quoting The Max Foundation‘s post:

World Cancer Day unites us in addressing the urgent need for every person experiencing cancer to receive treatment no matter where they live. One of the biggest barriers is receiving an accurate diagnosis.

Through a collaboration with our partners at Fred Hutch Cancer Center, we work with Dr. Jerry Radich and his team who developed a low-cost, paper-based diagnostic method for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). This innovative approach allows physicians to spot a patient’s blood onto a test card and mail it to Dr. Radich’s lab for accurate testing.

Last year, we provided diagnostic results to 210 people through the Spot on CML program across 9 countries. Once diagnosed, patients are connected to life-extending treatments free of charge.

Join us in celebrating the power of unity to overcome cancer through researchers like Dr. Radich in Seattle, medical providers like Sister Bimala in Nepal, and patients like Nancy in the Philippines who are willing to pioneer innovative approaches
