Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) diagnosed with cancer constitute a particular group of patients whose clinical and psychological needs differ substantially from those of pediatric patients or older adults. In recent years, the international scientific community has recognized the specific problems faced by AYA patients.
The scientific community should adapt to the needs of AYA patients with cancer by involving health professionals from different disciplines, patient rights advocates and other stakeholders.
In 2021, AIOM (Italian Association of Medical Oncology) joined forces with AIEOP (Italian Association of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology) to establish a formal AIEOP-AIOM intergroup to study ‘from below’ the various issues related to the treatment and care of AYAs with cancer. Recently, ‘There is time ODV’ has added the patient perspective to the project.
