Sami (Papacek) Mansfield: Cancer and an ignored risk – sarcopenic obesity.

“Cancer and an ignored risk : sarcopenic obesity.
For cancer survivors, it isn’t always about losing weight. Studies show that many face a heightened risk of prediabetes or diabetes, often due to the loss of skeletal muscle during treatment.
Here’s what recent research reveals:
Sarcopenic obesity (low muscle mass + obesity) significantly accelerates the progression to diabetes. In a non-cancer population, this condition doubled the risk of diabetes compared to having obesity or muscle loss alone.
For cancer patients, this has critical implications:
1. Treatment-related muscle loss can compound the risk of metabolic conditions.
2. Obesity and reduced physical activity during recovery worsen the situation.
The takeaway? Survivorship care plans must integrate metabolic health strategies:
Weight management: Focus on gradual, sustainable approaches.
Muscle preservation: Include resistance training as part of rehabilitation.
Cancer recovery isn’t just about beating cancer – it’s about building a healthy future.”
