Carmen Monge-Montero: An inspiring and impactful time at the 6th Global AYA Cancer Congress by Canteen Australia
Carmen Monge-Montero, Researcher and Patient Advocate at Youth Cancer Europe, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Just wrapped up an inspiring and impactful time at the 6th Global AYA Cancer Congress in Melbourne organized by Canteen Australia!
I was honored to represent Youth Cancer Europe and the Latin American region as an AYA with a lived cancer experience and researcher.
As co-chair of a plenary session on AYAs in Low- and Middle-Income Countries, I had the privilege of guiding, together with Claire Wakefield, critical discussions about equity and ethics in cancer care in LMICs, such as India, Papua New Guinea, and South Africa.
Special thanks to Rasika Bombatkar for sharing her experience receiving treatment in India and her follow-up in the UK.
Additionally, I delivered a talk on AYA cancer and migration, sharing my personal experience and how we can implement the EDI recommendations made at the European Network of Youth Cancer Survivors project and Youth Cancer Europe to improve the lives of migrants with a lived cancer experience.
Being part of the AYA with Lived Experience Working Group allowed me to amplify the voices of AYAs from LMICs, bringing attention to the unique challenges we face and adapting the program to non-native English-speaking populations.
This congress reinforced my belief in the power of global collaboration and the importance of inclusive conversations to drive meaningful change in AYA cancer care.
A huge thank you to Canteen North America, the organizers (Siona Hardy, Megan Baiocchi, Julie McGraw), Katie Rizvi, speakers, and attendees who made this event so memorable. Together, we are shaping a brighter, more equitable future for AYAs everywhere.”
