Sami (Papacek) Mansfield: Reflections on Two Decades in Exercise Oncology
Sami (Papacek) Mansfield, Founder of Cancer Wellness for Life and also a Chair of Cancer Member Interest Group, posted the following on LinkedIn:
“Two decades ago, I did my very first research project with KU Cancer Center under the leadership of Dr. Carol Fabian and Jennifer Klemp, PhD, MPH, MA. I was brought on as a consultant for a study on Energy Balance in postmenopausal breast cancer survivors.
We used DEXA scans to assess body composition, and our intervention was using prepackaged meals and resistance bands.
What did we learn?
- Dieting could drive short-term weight loss even in this population.
- Without strengthening exercises, short-term pounds lost returned quickly.
- A combination of moderate calorie restriction and exercise meant fewer pounds lost in the short term but more inches and better success in maintenance.
I found my love of strength training, found an incredible mentor in Jen (who was VERY patient with me in the early days of clinical trial work!), and set the foundation of my work, which I still love to this day!
Earlier this year, Jen and I spoke at several conferences together, and it reminded me of how far we’ve come, how far we have to go, and how powerful it is for us to keep collaborating, growing, and empowering our clinicians and patients.”
