“Art is Medicine” Uses Nature Photography to Connect North and South America Sylvester’s third annual Art is Medicine exhibit’s new theme is “The Bridge to Bahia,” highlighting photos from the Everglades to Brazil.
What: Visitors to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Health System, can take a first step toward wellness upon entering the first-floor atrium of the Sylvester main building in Miami, where a beautiful art exhibit blends images of Brazil and Florida. The exhibit coincides with the separate Art Basel Miami Beach fair 10 days later.
When: The Sylvester exhibit opens with a reception at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, and journalists are encouraged to attend.
Where: Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, 1475 NW 12th Ave., Miami, Fla., 33136. First floor of the Sylvester main building at the medical campus in Miami.
Why: Beyond beautiful photography, “The Bridge to Bahia” exhibit underscores the cross-cultural connections between Florida and Brazil and the intersectionality of art, scientific research and people. Photo contributors include patients, students, faculty and staff, along with featured photos by New York-based photographer Dar Riser. The collection will include a QR code that links to faculty profiles highlighting Sylvester’s hemispheric connections.
Who: Desert Horse-Grant, Sylvester’s chief transformation officer, created the arts challenge and curated the exhibition.
“We intentionally selected art that represents places many would want to travel to. We hope that, even momentarily, we can transport patients and caregivers to a place of peace and wonderment when they walk through the exhibit,” – Horse-Grant said.
