Sonali M. Smith is a candidate for a position on the Board of Directors for ASCO.

The ASCO Nominating Committee has selected 13 distinguished members as candidates for leadership positions within the Society.

ASCO encourages all eligible members to vote for the new leaders of the Society.
Eligible members include those holding a Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathy, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Pharmacy, Doctor of Medical Science, Doctor of Nursing Science, Doctor of Nursing Practice, or an equivalent doctoral-level degree recognized by the Society and the Association, and who are in good standing as of October 14, 2024. Voting in the ASCO Election will earn eligible members a FASCO point.

The voting period ends on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 3:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. All ballots, whether submitted online or by paper, must be received by this deadline.

Sonali M. Smith, M.D. is a Professor in the Department of Medicine, Section of Hematology/Oncology at The University of Chicago.

Sonali M. Smith, MD has been with the institution for over two decades, having risen through the academic ranks from Instructor in 2001 to her current role as Professor, a position she has held since 2017.

In recognition of her distinguished career, she was named the Elwood V. Jensen Professor of Medicine in 2017.

Dr. Smith has held various leadership positions at the University of Chicago, including Vice-Chair of the Chemotherapy Performance Improvement Team (CPIT) and Oncology Drug Safety Committee, Faculty Director of Inpatient Flow for Cancer Care, Associate Director and later Director of the Lymphoma Program, and Interim Section Chief of Hematology/Oncology.

Since 2020, she has served as the Chief of the Section of Hematology/Oncology and Co-Leader of the Cancer Service Line.

Dr. Smith’s clinical expertise and research focus on lymphoma, and she has been an influential leader in developing and refining cancer care protocols.

In addition to her clinical and academic roles, Dr. Smith has played an active role in shaping the field of oncology through her work with several prestigious professional organizations. She is an Associate Editor for Haematologica and serves on the editorial boards of numerous leading journals, including Clinical Lymphoma and Myeloma, Cancer, and Blood Cancer Journal.

She has also reviewed for high-impact journals like Blood, Lancet Hematology, and New England Journal of Medicine.

Beyond her editorial work, Dr. Smith has contributed to oncology education, including as a faculty member for the ASCO Oncology Summer Internship program, where she developed case-based learning for medical students interested in oncology.

She has served in numerous organizational capacities, including Chair of the Cancer Communications Committee and Chair of the Annual Meeting Scientific Committee for ASCO. Dr. Smith is also actively involved in the American Society of Hematology and has contributed to various committees and initiatives within the field.

Education

Sonali M. Smith, MD earned her B.A. in Biological Sciences (with Honors) and a minor in Italian Studies from Northwestern University in 1990.

She then earned her M.D. from Northwestern University Medical School in 1994. Dr. Smith pursued her residency in Internal Medicine at Northwestern from 1994 to 1997, where she served as Chief Medical Resident from 1997 to 1998.

Following this, she completed a Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at The University of Chicago from 1998 to 2001, where she also served as Chief Fellow during her final year.

She also pursued the Clinical Research Training Program at The University of Chicago from 2005 to 2009, and she participated in the BSD Leadership Development Academy in 2019-2020.
