Joe El Khoury: The First Regional Interdisciplinary Pediatric Palliative Care Workshop
Joe El Khoury, Head of Department of the Palliative Care Center – Centre Hospitalier Public d’Hauteville, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“So thrilled about the success and the energy of the First Regional Interdisciplinary Pediatric Palliative Care Workshop in Morocco organized by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in collaboration with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – ALSAC, the
Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean(POEM) group, and the Moroccan Society of Pediatric Hematology Oncology(SMHOP)!
Day 1 was dedicated to foundational learning, where we explored the core principles of pediatric palliative care, focusing on compassionate, family-centered, and culturally respectful approaches.
Day 2 was all about strategy. We worked together to develop actionable strategies at the hospital level, focusing on integrating palliative care practices within institutions. This included creating pathways for better communication, thinking about resource allocation, and brainstorming on building programs and referral systems to ensure every child receives the quality care they deserve.
Day 3 will be focusing on the meta level: how to engage partners at the national and regional levels.
Beyond the sessions, I had the pleasure of connecting with healthcare professionals from around the region, each committed to enhancing palliative care in their respective settings. The exchange of experiences and strategies was incredibly enriching and a testament to the power of collaboration in healthcare.
A huge thank you to all who attended and contributed. This experience has reaffirmed the importance of regional collaboration and strategic planning in making a lasting impact.
As I am leaving tonight, wishing I could stay longer and attend day 3 for more collaboration and interactions, I would like to share a message to everyone who is attending this fabulous workshop: All of you have the potential – and now hopefully the tools! – to become pioneers in your countries and communities. Make the most out of this workshop and go back home with a full toolbox!
And as I like to say… start slow… but dream big!
Now off to Casablanca for another teaching adventure!”
