Flavio Rocha – Candidate for ASCO Nominating Committee
Flavio Rocha, has been nominated as the Undesignated Member Candidate of the nomination committee for ASCO.
The ASCO Nominating Committee has selected 13 distinguished members as candidates for leadership positions within the Society.
ASCO encourages all eligible members to vote for the new leaders of the Society.
Eligible members include those holding a Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathy, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Pharmacy, Doctor of Medical Science, Doctor of Nursing Science, Doctor of Nursing Practice, or an equivalent doctoral-level degree recognized by the Society and the Association, and who are in good standing as of October 14, 2024. Voting in the ASCO Election will earn eligible members a FASCO point.
The voting period ends on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 3:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. All ballots, whether submitted online or by paper, must be received by this deadline.

Flavio Rocha, MD, is the Physician-in-chief at Knight Cancer Institute at at Oregon Health and Science University.
Dr. Rocha, has an extensive academic and administrative background in surgery and medical education. He served in various roles at many institutions, including Harvard Medical School (2001-2009), Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (2009-2011), and the University of Washington School of Medicine (2012-2020).
Currently, he is the Professor of Surgery and the Hugh and Georgeina Hedinger Chair in Surgical Oncology at Oregon Health and Science University.
In addition to his academic appointments, Dr. Rocha held significant administrative roles, including Director of Research at Virginia Mason Medical Center’s Digestive Disease Institute (2014-2020) and Associate Medical Director at the Floyd and Delores Jones Cancer Institute (2017-2020).
Education
Dr. Flavio Rocha’s educational background combines expertise in both engineering and medicine. He completed dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering, along with a Minor in Mathematical Sciences, at Johns Hopkins University (1992-1996).
He then earned his Doctor of Medicine with Honors from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine (1996-2001). After medical school, he trained in surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, where he completed his residency (2002-2008) and served as Chief Resident (2008-2009).
Dr. Rocha also pursued specialized research and clinical training, including fellowships in Gastrointestinal Physiology, Tissue Engineering, Surgical Oncology, and Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery.
