11th Annual ACS CAN Rhode Island Research Breakfast: Highlights by Wafik S. El-Deiry

The 11th Annual ACS CAN Rhode Island Research Breakfast took place on October 2, 2024.

The ACS CAN Rhode Island Research Breakfast is an annual event organized by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) in Rhode Island. This gathering aims to unite key stakeholders, including leaders from government, academia, and research sectors, to discuss the latest advancements in cancer research and innovation within the state.

This year’s event was emceed by Ted Nesi, who facilitated the discussions and interactions among attendees. The highlight of the event was a keynote address delivered by Dr. Don Dizon, who is affiliated with Brown University’s Legorreta Cancer Center. His talk was titled “The Importance of Belonging in Oncology,” emphasizing the significance of community and support in cancer care and research.

In addition to the keynote, the event featured a panel discussion focused on the State of Lung Cancer in Rhode Island. This discussion aimed to shed light on current challenges, innovations, and strategies being implemented to combat lung cancer within the state.

This year’s event, emcee’ d by Ted Nesi of WPRI-TV, will feature a keynote address by Don S. Dizon of Brown University’s Legorreta Cancer Center entitled The Importance of Belonging in Oncology, as well as a panel discussion on the State of Lung Cancer in Rhode Island.”

Senate support for Cancer:

“Senator Jack Reed speaks about strong senate support for NIH Funding and ARPA-H funding in the budget including strong support for cancer.

Congressman Gabe Amo spoke about Cancer Moonshot and legislation for MCED tests Speaker Shekarchi: We are here today because cancer touches everyone. There will be a new proton center in Johnston, Rhode Island, the second such facility in New England. Now is the time to connect with the Governor to request support for the fight against cancer in Rhode Island.”

Seth Magaziner about his mother:

“US Congressman Seth Magaziner speaks about his mother who is a six year cancer survivor from glioblastoma and was cared for at Rhode Island Hospital.”

Don Dizon about cancer disparities:

“Dr. Don Dizon speaks about cancer disparities at 11th Annual Rhode Island Research Breakfast.

Dr. Dizon spoke about ways the cancer center Legorreta Cancer Center is reaching out to the community as well as the transgender community.”

Ted Nesi’s personal experience:

“For Ted Nesi this is also personal as he lost his mother to glioblastoma at the age of 19. Last year he did a documentary on brain cancer that he shared a bit of this morning at the 11th Annual Rhode Island Research Breakfast.”

Panel discussion on lung cancer:

“Attending panel discussion on lung cancer at the 11th Annual Rhode Island Research Breakfast this morning. There has been much progress already but as well there as active research in Rhode Island for new treatments and progress being made in precision medicine as well as to address lung cancer screening disparities.”
