Residual breast tissue after mastectomy and reconstruction
Elisabetta Bonzano, Radiation Oncologist at IRCCS San Matteo Polyclinic Foundation, shared a post on X:
“Residual breast tissue after mastectomy and reconstruction: A substudy of the Spatial location of breast cancer local rECurRence aftEr masTectomy (SECRET) project
Different mastectomy procedures vary according to technique and extent of tissue removed.
The amount of residual glandular tissue may vary according to the type of mastectomy.
In this study the thickness of the “chest wall” was higher in skin sparing procedure compared to non-skin sparing mastectomy, which may be associated with more residual breast tissue.
Regardless of the type of mastectomy most local recurrences involve the subcutaneous tissue.”
