Ramy Sedhom: Summary points from American Cancer Society – CAPC webinar

Ramy Sedhom shared on X:

“For those who missed our webinar with the American Cancer Society and The Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC). We discussed the STEPPED PC trial and the REACH PC trial both presented at ASCO24.

Summary points:

  • There are supply / demand challenges with PC implementation. Opportunities exist to enhance “primary PC” and innovations in training such as ‘dual fellowships’
  • PC models matter and shared resources often help to make care patient-centric
  • “Stepping up” PC visits are beautiful opportunities to make care more sustainable (based on need) but they require some necessary investments (PROs, navigators, data infrastructure, teams assessing evolving need)
  • Telehealth is an opportunity BUT concerns still exist re: care equity (broadband access, technological challenges, wasted clinician time to get things started, etc)
  • Multidisciplinary care team is a core function of PC, concerns they are getting lost in more recent trials. New principal illness navigation reimbursement by CMS is an opportunity to expand this footprint as core members of the care team.”
