Miriam Mutebi: Breastfeeding can reduce your risk of breast cancer
Miriam Mutebi, Breast Surgical Oncologist at the Aga Khan University Hospital, posted on LinkedIn:
“I’m sure you’ve heard or read somewhere that breastfeeding can reduce your risk of breast cancer.
Fact or Myth?
Well, it’s true!
Studies have shown that breastfeeding has a protective effect against breast cancer, particularly for mothers who nurse for longer durations. The hormones released during breastfeeding may help to prevent changes in breast tissue that can lead to cancer.
However, while this is an encouraging fact, it’s not a foolproof guarantee. When it comes to breast cancer, breastfeeding is just one piece of the puzzle.
Factors like genetics, age, lifestyle, and regular screenings play significant roles in your overall breast health.
In Africa, the conversation around breastfeeding and breast cancer is particularly important, considering our women tend to get diagnosed at a younger age, within their reproductive period.
African women (and sometimes health workers) are also more likely to dismiss new lumps as ‘part of the effects of breastfeeding’. While most of the time this might be nothing to worry about, it doesn’t automatically rule out cancer, a risk of developing infections, or something more worrisome.
Hence, emphasizing the significance of regular breast health checks throughout an adult woman’s life, even if they breastfed their children is vital, especially as women age.
In summary, ladies, let’s remain proactive!
Don’t stop monitoring changes in your body and keep those scheduled screenings going.”
