“The urgent need to protect WHO is also an opportunity”

“The recent announcement of the United States by the WHO is critical for global health. The WHO coordinates the global response for a wide range of serious infectious and non-communicable diseases. The WHO’s efforts are therefore crucial for world health and our common fight against diseases.
A weakened WHO therefore affects vulnerable citizens around the world and compromises efforts against cross-border pandemic threats. The importance of the United States has been enormous both in terms of direct support and in terms of the efforts of American experts.
The situation requires that other countries firmly support international cooperation and the WHO’s efforts. I have written about this together with other directors of European public health institutions.”
Bente Mikkelsen, Former Director of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCD) at WHO Headquarters in Geneva, shared this post, adding:
“Thank you for this very important and thoughtful commentary on the importance of Global Public Health and World Health Organization from the leaders of public health institutions across Europe.”
