Neighborhood Disadvantage and Stress-Related Gene Expression in Prostate Tumor

Advanced Prostate Cancer Consensus Conference shared on LinkedIn about a recent paper by Joseph Boyle et al. titled “Neighborhood Disadvantage and Prostate Tumor RNA Expression of Stress-Related Genes”  published in JAMA Network

Neighborhood Disadvantage

“Neighborhood Disadvantage and Prostate Tumor RNA Expression of Stress-Related Genes out on JAMA Network Open.

Study explores the link between neighborhood disadvantage and stress-related gene expression in prostate tumors, particularly in African American men, who face higher rates of prostate cancer and mortality.

Researchers analyzed tumor RNA data from men who underwent prostate surgery, comparing neighborhood deprivation indices with gene expression.

African American men were found to live in more disadvantaged neighborhoods, which was associated with increased expression of stress-related and proinflammatory genes, including those in the serotonin pathway.

Findings suggest that neighborhood stress may impact tumor biology, potentially contributing to prostate cancer disparities. Further research is needed to confirm and expand these results.”
