“The Unique That Unites

You may have noticed that lately, I’ve been reflecting on my journey with cancer—from the roles I’ve played as a family member, carer, and patient. And I can say with certainty: every cancer journey is uniquely personal. Even when the diagnosis carries the same label, our minds, bodies, and souls react in their own way. No two stories are the same.

But, as I’ve often said, cancer is a great leveler. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how much money you have, or what you believe. Cancer strips everything down to the basics: live or die, thrive or barely survive. In that raw space, life becomes more precious than ever before.

Strangers suddenly become comrades, fellow warriors in hospital waiting rooms, in support groups, in spaces where shared experience makes us feel seen and understood. There’s an unspoken solidarity among us, as fierce as it is unbreakable. There’s a certain safety in being surrounded by others who truly “get it”. It makes the battle feel a little more bearable when you know you’re not alone.

And then there’s social media, a place where isolation fades into connection. Instead of facing it alone, you’re joined by hundreds, sometimes thousands, of cancer warriors who understand the depth of what you’re going through. You realize that even though each of us walks our own path, we’re united by a common enemy.

Until you’ve walked that road yourself, it’s hard to fully understand. But once you do, you see how, despite our unique journeys, we are bound together by something much bigger—our fight against cancer.

I salute my family of warriors who have kept me going all these years and given me a reason to keep doing what I do.
