Olubukola Ayodele: Time for things to change in the UK with breast cancer screening

Olubukola Ayodele, Consultant Medical Oncologist at University Hospitals of Leicester Cancer Research Centre, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The US preventive services task force (USPSTF) now recommends biennial screening mammography for women ages 40-74. The American Cancer Society favours annual mammographic screening to start at 40.

It is time for things to change in the UK where breast cancer screening is still only offered to women aged 50 – 71 years every 3 years.

The average age of breast cancer patients I have seen in the last 3 years is 46 years (range 17-84 years). Breast cancer is no longer a cancer of the old and we need to do better for women.

Annual mammographic screening from the age of 40 should be the recommended practice for the general population and earlier in women who are deemed high risk.”
