NHS England – More children like Aaliyah will now be able to access a new targeted treatment for brain tumors which can be taken at home

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust shared a post by NHS England on LinkedIn, adding:

“The first-ever targeted treatment for brain tumours in children approved for NHS patients.

This milestone comes after 20 years of dedicated research by GOSH consultant Professor Darren Hargrave.

Learn how this new cancer treatment came to be.”

Quoting NHS England’s post:

“More children like Aaliyah will now be able to access a new targeted treatment for brain tumors which can be taken at home.

‘I’m able to just take tablets twice a day and go to the hospital every few months, rather than be in hospital to have chemotherapy. I’ve been able to start secondary school with my friends and carry on my hobbies like being a majorette.’

Aaliyah’s brain tumour was found during a routine eye appointment. She was part of a clinical trial at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust of two treatments called dabafenib and trametinib which can stop cancer progressing more than three times longer than chemotherapy.

‘I’m really pleased that other teenagers and children will now be able to have the tablets instead of chemotherapy, it will make a real difference.’

This is just the latest example of our efforts to make more effective treatments available for patients to improve the lives of those facing cancer.”
