Abhishek Shankar: We must raise demand for cervical cancer screening
Abhishek Shankar, Secretary General at Asian Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention (APOCP), shared on LinkedIn:
“I was in the city of Joy Kolkata to attend a conference, organised by West Bengal Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society and AOGIN, led by Dipanwita Banerjee. Amid the war situation, I did not except a full house with participants standing and happily listening to speakers from every corner of the country. I congratulate Dipanwita for a successful conference.
I was speaking on cervical cancer screening guidelines and discussed about standard test to choose for cervical cancer screening in different scenarios. I discovered that practice of cervical cancer screening is very low among the health care providers engaged in cervical cancer care. This necessitates the need of awareness at every level as in spite of increase in supply over time, there is still a problem from the demand side.
HPV DNA testing is standard for cervical cancer screening and can be started at the age of 30 years and repeated every five years. We will have to achieve 70% of screening goals to achieve cervical cancer elimination goals in India.
Please write here or mail me on [email protected] if you have a question or suggestions.”
