Yan Leyfman: Breakthrough in Engineered Tissue Production

Yan Leyfman, Co-founder and executive director of MedNews Week, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”Breakthrough in Engineered Tissue Production.

A new hollow fiber bioreactor (HFB) design featuring microscale fiber uniformity has enabled the creation of centimeter-scale, perfused chicken muscle tissue with minimal necrosis and improved structure.

Key innovations:

  •  Leak-free perfusion enhances cell activity
  • Uniform nutrient/oxygen delivery via closely packed semipermeable fibers
  • Microanchors guide cell alignment for realistic muscle morphology
  • Active perfusion boosts protein expression and sarcomere formation
  • Robotic assembly demonstrates scalability

Next steps include exploring recyclable and edible fibers to improve sustainability. This platform opens the door to scalable cultured meat and large-scale biofabrication, with wide-reaching potential across cellular agriculture and regenerative medicine.”
