Karin Manchester: When I was told I had leukaemia, I never thought I would still be here 20 years later – ICR
The Institute of Cancer Research shared on LinkedIn:
” ‘When I was told I had leukaemia, I never thought I would still be here 20 years later.’
Karin Manchester, 65, was told she had just a week to live after being diagnosed with the blood cancer acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in 2004.
‘I was kept alive with numerous blood transfusions, platelet transfusions and antibiotics. For my family, especially my children, it was extremely distressing.’
‘As a nurse, I had seen people with AML before, though I had never seen anyone survive it.’
Thanks to successful treatment and taking part in a clinical trial, Karin has been in remission for over 20 years.
‘The importance of cancer research is not lost on me. I would not be here without it. As a nurse, I had never seen anyone with AML live – now more and more people are being cured.’
‘Without cancer research, and new treatments and new drugs being developed, we would never move forward or understand the causes of cancer. Cancer research has played an important part in my life.’
Our research is discovering new smarter, targeted treatments that will help more people survive blood cancer.
This World AML Awareness Day, Karin shares her story.
