Carmen Uscatu: When we team up, we can create a future where every child gets a fair chance to shine
Carmen Uscatu, Founding Member and President of Give Life, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“In December 2024, in Memphis, USA, at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in front of 521 in-person attendees and over 800 virtual attendees from 68 countries and 185 organizations, I began my speech with:
‘I am here with you today to share a sacred promise. I am the co-founder of Give Life. Give Life is the NGO that builds opportunities for children with cancer in Romania through our largest project.’
And I finished with:
‘I stand here today, in front of you as a citizen of an Eastern European country, saddened by the unjust disparities in five-year survival rates for children with cancer, which show an 11% difference between the East and the West.
I am sure that many people from Eastern Europe share this sadness. There is no reason for us to lag behind in medical advancements compared to the Western world.’
Clinicians and foundations around the globe understand the importance of collaboration. I am currently coming back from a trip to Albania, where I met with authorities, parents, and clinicians in the field of pediatric cancer.
They have just opened a renovated department, at Mother Teresa Hospital and want to build an association that will give them the support they need. The reasons why they are so willing to collaborate and learn from the best? It is simple: they want to save children.
I saw so many similarities between their project and our project. This is why I’m sure that through their determination and dedication, they will succeed in having a good clinic. As we, Romania, hope to have the same level of care for children as we see in Western European countries.
Because let’s be real, when we team up, we can create a future where every child gets a fair chance to shine. As Margaret Mead once said, ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.’
Thank you, Donjeta Bali (Alia), for the invitation to participate and Prof. Dr. Rob Pieters (Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology) for his support in this wonderful opportunity. Let’s keep the hope alive in these difficult times through this kind of project.”
