Cory Curry: Behind the Curtain tour of St. Elizabeth Healthcare
Cory Curry, Financial Advisor at Baird, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Last week, I got the chance to take a Behind the Curtain tour of St. Elizabeth Healthcare. To say I was blown away by the care, compassion and commitment to the mission would be an understatement. The level of enthusiasm by everyone I encountered along the way was off the charts. The investment in technology is world-class.
My ‘rotations’ included stops at:
- The Heart and Vascular Institute and Oncology – Surgery
- Precision Medicine/AI/LINAC in the St. E Cancer Center
- Interventional Radiology/Electrophysiology Cath Lab
Here are a few things I learned/experienced:
- A lot of the important work that is done behind the scenes in the Cancer Center on behalf of individual patients isn’t even billable, yet St. E is committed to a 360-approach looking at all facets of a patient’s care.
- Blood clots are generally way larger than I imagined
- Pace makers are now the size of a pill and wireless.
- I successfully opened a Dum Dum sucker with a Da Vinci robot!
- The ‘radiation’ machine used for cancer treatments is able to pinpoint its ray down to the size of a pen tip, limiting damage to healthy cells.
- Precision Medicine is incredible. From St. E, “Precision medicine embraces the “this is right for you, personally” approach instead of a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. This unique type of medicine focuses on healthcare, disease treatment and prevention by utilizing genetic information to guide a patient’s healthcare path.” Their genetic testing is now more affordable than ever. The cash price is $250 but most with insurance pay $100 or less! 859-301-GENE It could save your life!
- Lung cancer is the most common cancer in our region and the world. St. E has a world-renowned screening program that has led to a number of discoveries. So much so that they travel around the country to talk to others about their program. Over the last several years, they’ve noticed a shift from finding primarily late-stage cancers to more early-stage cancers which means the screening is working!
- A Cardiac Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) can be a life saver. Often times people who appear perfectly healthy can have cardiac issues lurking undetected. One of the examples was a marathon runner in his late 30s who ended up having a CTA done at the encouragement of a friend and it led to finding a partial blockage!
All of this was from memory so apologies if my stats are not 100% accurate!
Thank you to Garren Colvin, Douglas Flora, Michael Gieske, DP Suresh, Kevin Schuler, the St. Elizabeth Foundation and everyone else who contributed to a very enlightening and informative day. Great work is being done every day right here in our community!”
Douglas Flora, Executive Medical Director of Young Family Cancer Center at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, shared this post, adding:
“Thank you, Cory Curry, for helping us tell our story, where the patient is always going to be the main character!”
