Humaid Al-Shamsi: Let’s prioritize science and the guidance of specialists for the safety of all patients

Humaid Al-Shamsi, Founder and Director of Medical Oncology at Burjeel Medical City, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Recently, a video featuring Mel Gibson discussing deworming drugs, fenbendazole and ivermectin, as potential cancer cures has gone viral. While lab studies show these drugs may have activity against cancer cells when combined with chemotherapy, there is no solid evidence they are effective in humans.

For example, Joe Tippens, who claimed fenbendazole cured his stage 4 lung cancer, was also on advanced immunotherapy (Keytruda), which is known to benefit many cancer patients.

Similar rumors in South Korea in 2019 caused a frenzy, only for the actor who promoted them to later report no benefit before passing away.

Unapproved drugs can cause serious harm, including liver failure. While some stage 4 cancer patients do recover, this happens with advanced, evidence-based treatments under expert care.

Let’s prioritize science and the guidance of specialists for the safety of all patients.”
