Arif Kamal: Change isn’t all that hard if you’re staying the same

Arif Kamal, Chief Patient Officer for the American Cancer Society, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“In professional and personal life, a colleague once told me,

‘Change isn’t all that hard…

… especially if you’re staying the same and it’s others that you’re asking to do the changing.’

In reflecting on the ‘diffusion of innovation’ challenge that plagues medicine, where new ideas or processes takes an average of 17 years to reach the masses, and comparing that to rapid cadence of change in Moore’s Law (transistors change to double the speed every two years), it’s clear that electronic chips change much more readily than people.

People require careful attention to the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ of change.

Our executive team at American Cancer Society recently met with our partners at Salesforce and among the many insights we discussed, this slide caught my attention. As our colleagues put it, five critical steps are needed to achieve transformation, and if you omit one, you can get any one of a slew of emotions.”
