Rafael José Argüello: Setbacks are a part of life – they refine us, not define us
“Some personal news to share:
I wasn’t selected for an important position I had aspired to. I’ve taken some time to communicate this because it’s been a news that’s difficult to digest.
The institute didn’t prioritize Human ImmunoMetabolism as thematic. We might agree or disagree, and it’s partly a “strategic decision”.
I want to sincerely thank all my peers. Your support has meant everything to me. I’ve felt seen, heard and valued by those who know the depth and breadth of my work.
I’ve given my best to the Institute, tried to make impactful contributions. External perspectives failed to recognize those efforts.
I’m incredibly grateful to those who know my worth and have been by my side. Your belief in me during these times, reinforces my passion for science.
For context, after a long process, I ended up 4th out of 27 candidates. In this place that saw me grow, there’s a notable historical bias against internal candidates. This message can be demotivating (for others) that still believe in the scientific community.
Immunometabolism is a pivotal field in biomedical research. It’s here to stay. It’s disappointing that other thematic areas were favoured, but I remain committed to its advancement.
Here’s the bright side: I have a tenured position, a team, significant funding starting soon (2 ANR, 2 European Projects >2M w/overheads), a thriving network (European ImmunoMetabolism Network) with great collaborators (Bousso Lab, Perielab, INP Marseille, CRCM – Cancer Research Centre of Marseille and others ++)
My ambition remains unwavering. I’m will be on the resilient lookout for environments where I can contribute the best to the scientific community. I will continue working where my passion, projects, and team can truly shine.
“Its not the calm sea that create the best sailors” .. and my journey hasn’t been a walk in the park.
I’ve come from afar, and I refuse to let this setback demotivate me. I envision to continue fostering collective efforts, challenging the status quo, and collaborate with fearless, innovative minds.
I am not good at sharing bad news, but setbacks are a part of life. They refine us, not define us. I’m looking forward to the next chapter, and I’m excited about what the future holds. Thanks for being part of my journey.”
