Sachin H. Jain: Every so often I get a call from someone who wants to get advice on a challenging or difficult job situation.
Sachin H. Jain, President and CEO of Scan Group and Health Plan, recently shared on LinkedIn:
“Every so often I get a call from someone who wants to get advice on a challenging or difficult job situation.
When we zero in on what’s happening—it’s usually something that starts out small that has become big.
A modest disagreement about compensation.
A real (or perceived) slight.
A toxic co-worker.
A change in strategy.
A change in a reporting relationship.
Sometimes—the situation is untenable and requires that the person change jobs and our conversation focuses on finding new opportunities.
More often than not—I find myself giving people different golden advice that I received earlier in my career:
Don’t let the 10% of your job that stinks overtake the 90% of your job that is awesome.
It happens all the time – we let the imperfections and annoying situations dominate our view of our situation.
We become mildly obsessed about it—and end up in mental cul de sacs that are unhelpful.
Check yourself before you wreck yourself.
It’s rarely as good as your think—or as bad.
And reminding yourself (and others) of that may be the most important thing you can do to get out of challenging situations.”
