Sami Mansfield: Exciting insights from MASCC Lung Cancer Survival and the Power of Sleep Health

Sami Mansfield,

” Exciting Insights from The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) Lung Cancer Survival & the Power of Sleep Health

One of the highlights of the ASCO2024 summer series for me has been the incredible updates on progression-free survival in Lung Cancer, paired with vital discussions on the importance of Quality Of Life for these patients.

Sleep Health: An Overlooked but Essential Component?
Sleep is often brushed over with a quick “Do you sleep well?” but this is where I see a huge opportunity for Lifestyle Medicine to play a role—starting from the point of diagnosis. Sleep disruptions are common, whether due to anxiety, pain, or medications like steroids, especially in complex immunotherapy treatments.

This article highlights the importance of addressing sleep disruptions in lung cancer patients. While more research is needed, we can support our patients right now with simple, cost-effective lifestyle changes.

Top Sleep Health Strategies from our patient facing My Lifestyle Shift program
– Consistency is Key: Stick to a regular wake and sleep time.
– Morning Routine: Get light exposure (sunlight if possible), hydrate, and move for 1 minute.
– Nighttime Routine: Establish a calming routine that signals your body it’s time to sleep. Include habits like brushing your teeth at the same time, focusing on calming thoughts, and practicing gratitude—I always remind myself to be grateful for today.

If you’re in the area and interested in Lung Cancer, join me in a few weeks in Washington DC where I’ll be presenting on Exercise Oncology and Lifestyle Medicine. Let’s dive into practical strategies for assessing and supporting our patients—plus, we’ll even fit in a Tabata session!”
