Nirmala Bhoo Pathy: Breaking down harmful stereotypes with Cheng-Har Yip

Nirmala Bhoo Pathy shared a post on LinkedIn:

“During our live session on BFM 89.9 – The Business Station today, Prof. Cheng-Har Yip and I unpacked our report from the Lancet Commission on Women, Power, and Cancer for Malaysians.

We dove into challenging and uncomfortable topics like cultural norms, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination. Apart from exploring how these barriers can delay cancer diagnoses and limit treatment access for women, we also illustrated using our own stories how these issues extend into the cancer workforce.

But our discussion wasn’t just about identifying the problems, it was also about breaking down harmful stereotypes.

In a world where men are often celebrated as heroes for their achievements and women are praised as martyrs for their endurance, it’s time to challenge these limiting narratives.

As part of the Lancet Commission, we’re dedicated to reshaping how women’s strength and agency are recognized, ensuring they’re celebrated in all aspects of life, not just in times of suffering.

Listen in to our conversation.”
