Genetic testing in prostate cancer management: Considerations informing primary care out on Cancer Journal for Clinicians

Inherited genetic mutations can greatly increase the risk of Prostate Cancer (PC) and are often linked to more aggressive forms of the disease, affecting both the patient and their family’s cancer risk Germline genetic testing is now highly recommended, especially for those with advanced or metastatic PC, as it can guide targeted therapies and clinical trial options. National guidelines advocate for testing across all stages of PC and for men at high risk due to family history.

Primary care providers play a crucial role in identifying at-risk individuals, emphasizing the need for their education on genetic testing’s role in PC management. This review underscores the importance of integrating genetic counseling, testing, and multidisciplinary care to improve outcomes.
