The opening of the new Paterson Building in Manchester

Iain Foulkes,

“Seven years on from the devastating fire that caused its closure, it was wonderful to attend the opening of the new Paterson Building in Manchester yesterday. There was a great atmosphere in the room as guests heard about plans for the new building which will house a multidisciplinary team of over 300 scientists, 400 clinicians and operational staff.

A partnership between Cancer Research UK (CRUK), The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and The University of Manchester, the Paterson will deliver discovery research and translate this into clinical trials covering the full extent of the patient pathway.

The building will be home to the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, Cancer Research UK National Biomarker Centre, the headquarters of the International Alliance for Cancer Early Detection, RadNet and The Academy of Surgical Oncology.”

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust shared on LinkedIn:

“Yesterday, we were joined by around 350 guests for the official opening of our new research centre.

The Paterson Building was officially opened by Professor Sir Paul Nurse, Nobel Prize winner and director of The Francis Crick Institute.

Adele Adams, a patient who is now in remission after being on a trial for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, shared what research means to her and Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, talked about the importance of the facility for our city region.

Roger Spencer (CEO of The Christie), Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell (President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Manchester) and Dr Iain Foulkes (Executive Director of Research at Cancer Research UK (CRUK)) spoke about the rebuilding of the facility following the fire in 2017 and the significance of the partnership, otherwise known as the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, in future research.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Diane Hawkins, and the relatives of Ralston and Edith Paterson, the researchers after whom the building is named, also joined us on the day.”
