Sharon Kapambwe: Representing WHO in Uzbekistan
Sharon Kapambwe, Technical Officer of Cancer Control at the World Health Organization, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Yesterday, I represented the WHO at the meeting of the Council for the Coordination of Projects in the Field of Breast and Cervical Cancer Control in Uzbekistan.
The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Health, Khudayarov Alsilbek Anvarovich, and the Head of Unit at the Administration of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Nozima Davletova.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Uzbekistan, and cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women.
The country is making significant strides in capacity building, policy and infrastructure development to ensure the control of the two cancers in women.
In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan № 402 of November 22, 2024 ‘On measures to improve the system of cancer control among women’, a regular meeting of the Council of the Ministry of Health is held to coordinate the implementation of projects in the field of combating breast and cervical cancer at the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Mother and Child Health.
On June 30, 2025, the National Cervical Cancer Screening and Breast Cancer Control Program was launched in Uzbekistan.
The meeting critically considered the work carried out so far, to fulfil the tasks specified in the Program approved by this resolution and developed mechanisms for eliminating current implementation problems.
WHO has two global initiatives on women’s cancers, Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative and the Global Breast Cancer Initiative. WHO remains committed to supporting Uzbekistan in reaching the targets and saving the precious lives of women in Uzbekistan.”
