Idah Phiri: A Beacon of Hope – The Rise of Ndola Cancer Treatment Center
Idah Phiri, Communications and Administration Manager at Zambian Cancer Society , shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A BEACON OF HOPE: THE RISE OF NDOLA CANCER TREATMENT CENTER
In the heart of Zambia’s Copperbelt Province, a remarkable transformation is taking shape, one that promises to bring renewed hope to thousands of families affected by cancer. The construction of the Ndola Cancer Treatment Center is well underway, with 70% of the works already completed, signaling the dawn of a new era in the nation’s healthcare system.
Rising steadily from the red soils of Ndola, the center stands not just as a structure of steel and stone, but as a symbol of Zambia’s commitment to accessible and equitable health care. For decades, cancer patients, particularly those from the Copperbelt, have had to travel long distances to access specialized care, often at great emotional and financial cost. But now, the tides are turning.
Once completed, the Ndola Cancer Treatment Center will be the second national facility of its kind, complementing the Cancer Diseases Hospital in Lusaka. Strategically located, it will bring life-saving services closer to the communities that need them most, including early detection, diagnostics, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and palliative care. No longer will a cancer diagnosis mean the burden of relocation or the heartbreak of delayed treatment.
The facility is more than a hospital, it’s an anchor of resilience, a place where families will be able to fight for life with dignity and support. Its construction has already sparked hope among residents. Local health workers, caregivers, and communities are optimistic about the change this center will bring, not only in saving lives but also in reducing the pressures on Lusaka’s facility and decentralizing specialized care.
Beyond the medical services, the center will create employment, attract skilled specialists, and drive investments into the local health sector, creating a ripple effect of empowerment throughout the region. It will be a place of healing, learning, and innovation, where Zambian professionals will continue to grow in the fight against non-communicable diseases.
As the walls of the Ndola Cancer Treatment Center rise higher, so does the promise of a healthier, stronger Copperbelt and a healthier Zambia. This is not just a construction project; it is a Legacy in the Making; a game changer for generations to come.
And with each brick laid, Zambia moves one step closer to a future where quality cancer care is not a privilege, but a right for all.
